THE CASCADE HEAD BIOSPHERE COLLABORATIVE PRESENTS:
"Unlocking the Secrets of Tsunamis”
How these re-ocurring coastal events have shaped all our lives here in Cascadia.
Thursday, Nov. 30th from 6:00- 8:00 PM
On the West Coast we all live with the results of thousands of years of tectonic plates riding over each other and causing subduction zone earthquakes, which in turn create massive Tsunamis. Learn from this expert about the last 10,000 years of these fascinating events, as well as how they have shaped the world we live in, and what to expect of the “Big One” in the future. Bring your questions!
Our featured expert: Dr. Jonathan Allan is a distinguished Coastal Geomorphologist with the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries and one of the PNW's leading experts on Tsunami’s and how to prepare for them.
Jonathan Allan is a coastal geomorphologist with the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries (DOGAMI). Allan completed his undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in New Zealand specializing in coastal processes and hazards. During the past 23 years, Allan has undertaken studies that include coastal erosion hazard mapping, analyses of the North Pacific wave climate and the effect of extreme storms on Pacific Northwest (PNW) beaches, assessments of storm surges and seasonal to interannual variations in sea level changes on the PNW coast. In 2015, Allan took over the Tsunami program from Dr. George Priest following his retirement from DOGAMI. With the completion of tsunami inundation modeling for the Oregon coast in 2013, the tsunami program has largely focused on tsunami evacuation modeling, which provides an improved understanding of the time (and speed) it takes the public to evacuate along every route in coastal communities. The tsunami program is also performing risk assessments along the Oregon coast to provide emergency managers and planners with key data needed to develop pre and post-disaster mitigation plans.
